Edgar Cayce: An American Prophet, by Sidney D. Kirkpatrick. Edgar Cayce was one of the most humble and influential people of his day, a man whose outstanding psychic abilities appeared to heal hundreds of patients. The F.B.I. and even master magician Henry Houdini couldn't debunk or explain Cayce's amazing gifts. Biographer Sidney D. Kirkpatrick has no interest in probing the question of whether Cayce had legitimate psychic powers. Rather he presents an evenhanded story about the life of this American prophet, using a myriad of sources, including transcripts of his trances as well as Cayce's personal letters and papers. (Kirkpatrick is the only author to be granted unrestricted access.) What makes this biography especially fresh and lasting is Kirkpatrick's excellent storytelling skills, evidenced in his opening pages when he describes Cayce entering his characteristic trance to diagnose a seemingly dying infant in the other room. Although Cayce prescribed a seemingly lethal dose of the homeopathic belladonna (deadly nightshade), the baby survived and was healed. Whether telling of these miraculous moments or the horrifying harassment in Cayce's life, Kirkpatrick always stays grounded in documented facts and clear information. Cayce aficionados will enjoy especially the accounts of encounters with George Gershwin, Marilyn Monroe, and even the likelihood that he met with President Woodrow Wilson. --Tara West.

Story of Edgar Cayce: There Is a River, by Thomas Sugrue. The astounding true story of Edgar Cayce, his remarkable prophecies, insights into the soul, and the medical cures he prescribed while in trance, told by the only writer who knew and investigated him while he lived. This book -- which contains many photos of Edgar Cayce, his family, and close friends -- is the complete, original biography of the best-documented psychic in America. It tells the story of how he discovered his astounding psychic gifts and what led him to a life dedicated to helping others. Cayce's "readings," given in a trancelike state, ranged from phenomenal medical cures to advice on spiritual growth, psychology, and prophecy of world events. A philosophy section covers our origin, purpose, and destinies on the earth, making this book a valuable resource.

Thomas Sugrue graduated from Washington and Lee University with Hugh Lynn Cayce, Edgar Cayce’s son. He became a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune and, later, joined the staff at American Magazine. In 1940, his first book, Such Is the Kingdom, was published, followed later by Starling of the White House. At one point in his life , he was struck by a disease that left him partially paralyzed and with little chance of survival. However, he later recovered well enough to become an active swimmer, an improvement due, he believed, to following the readings he received from Edgar Cayce.

The Lost Memoirs of Edgar Cayce: Life As a Seer, by Edgar Cayce and A. Robert Smith (Compiler). For over 75 years, the prophecies and readings of Edgar Cayce - The Sleeping Prophet -have inspired millions of people around the world, and been the subject of hundreds of books. Over 50 years after his death, Cayce is still regarded as the father of the new age movement, and the foremost psychic of the 20th century. But until now, only those who knew and studied him have been able to tell Cayce's story and philosophy. From Jess Stearn's The Sleeping Prophet to Thomas Sugrue's There Is A River, many best-selling books have sold millions of copies and touched many lives.

Now, for the first time, Edgar Cayce tells his story in his own words. Only recently discovered, this new memoir delivers Cayce's important message to the world at a most crucial time, the dawn of the 21st century. In this personal, moving story, readers learn how Cayce felt about his amazing powers. Here Cayce speaks about the angelic presence that visited his childhood Kentucky home and told him that he would become a healer to millions. We also learn about his extraordinary childhood ability to learn his school lessons simply by sleeping on his books. Cayce also addresses the devastating throat paralysis that he miraculously overcame, and how he ultimately realized that his powers could only be used to help and enable people, and not for personal profit. Cayce even gives a "behind the scenes" glimpse at his many psychic readings.

The combination of ability and humility, compassion and caring turned Cayce from social outcast to world-renowned psychic healer. The Work of Edgar Cayce As Seen Through His Letters, by Edgar Cayce, Charles Thomas Cayce, and Jeanette M. Thomas. Charles Thomas Cayce, eldest grandchild of Edgar Cayce, and Jeanette Thomas, administrator of the A.R.E. records and archives, have brought together a definitive collection of letters from and to Edgar Cayce that illuminate the man and his God-given talents as a "psychic diagnostician." This unique and compelling collection provides a firsthand look at Edgar Cayce's efforts to use his gift in service to others; his struggles with financial hardships and sometimes-public humiliation; and his efforts to reconcile the information that came through him on topics such as reincarnation, Atlantis, and astrology with his devoutly Christian beliefs. Cayce's letters show, as no other documents can, how his psychic gift drove him, against all odds and many setbacks, towards his dream for "the Work" -- the development of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, which has preserved his work and made it accessible to all.
